I have been sketching motifs for use as stripes, single stamps, starbursts and other application for some time. My affection for mid-century modernism hasn't faded as fast as some of my other stylistic interests. Static Wave simply takes the idea of "stripes" and gives it texture, modulation, vibration. At different scales, the waves and undulations of the pattern can convey jazzy tropical motion, but that motion and activity could get out of hand if the colors and contrast get too extreme. The colorways I'm starting with for Static Wave are chosen as lush analogous groups. The overall effect may be "red", but can our eyes and environment be entertained by a wide, exciting range of reds? Doesn't pink play well with red? How about orange? It's a party, and everyone on the block is invited. In these color selections I've tried to celebrate a whole side of the color wheel, and by shuffling the different hues together, create an excitement that comes not from contrast, but chroma. Exciting, but not distressing, to the eye.
